Working at PA - Apprenticeships

The case studies below explain in the writer's own words what it is like to follow an apprenticeship at Packaging Automation. With an apprenticeship, you can start earning a wage straight away and still get the opportunity to go to college or university. An apprenticeship can give you the best of both worlds - earning on the job while attending day release at college – developing the skills and qualifications to really boost your career.

We offer engineering and administration apprenticeships to young people with the drive and enthusiasm to succeed. If you want to find out more email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call 01565 755000 and speak to the HR Department.

Katie Welsh

Katie WelshKatie Welsh, 25, joined PA as an apprentice 9 years ago and is currently a project engineer.

She says: “I joined PA in 1999 after completing my GCSEs. I have already finished a HND course and am currently studying for a BENG (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. PA has really encouraged and supported me. My job is very varied with new challenges every day – working on the shop floor and in a busy office dealing with different people makes it interesting. I am also increasing my knowledge, skills and education at the same time and there is a clear career path available to me. My ultimate aim is to achieve chartered engineer status.

Doing an apprenticeship has been a very successful option as it has allowed me to continue my education while earning money. I would definitely encourage other young people to consider this career route.”

Dan Chesters

Dan ChestersDan Chesters, 22, a PA apprentice for 4 years says: “I started working at PA after I was made redundant by my previous employer. I enjoy the practical aspect of my job, as it’s very hands-on building the machines. Apprentices at PA get involved in every aspect of the work – so I’m also involved in servicing and repair work at customers’ premises, which is something I enjoy.

I love working here and I know that I am getting good qualifications behind me – I have completed National Certificate and HNC in Mechanical Engineering and an NVQ3. PA allows apprentices to take their studying as far as they like and they treat us just the same as everyone else here – we are just part of the team.”

George Bibby-Cheshire

George Bibby-CheshireGeorge Bibby-Cheshire, 22, joined PA nearly 5 years ago and has completed a National Certificate and HND in Mechanical Engineering.

He says: “For me an apprenticeship is the perfect solution as it allows me to earn money and continue my education. PA has guided me through college and been really supportive. My work involves mechanical assembly of packaging machines and carrying out service visits – both in the UK and overseas. Last year I went to South Africa to service equipment. I enjoy the support I get, as well as the fact that I’m always busy with different jobs and I’m always learning new things. I feel like I’m part of the team here. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to continue their education, but who wants to start earning at the same time.”
