4: pack options

InSide Cut

This describes the amount of film overhang on a sealed pack. For presentation purposes some food manufacturers prefer to trim all of the excess film from the sealed pack to leave no overhang. However, there are some factors to take into account when considering this option as the presence of some or all of these will have an impact on the consistency of seal, cut and accuracy of the film/tray alignment:
  • contamination on the tray flange (e.g. food or oil)
  • proud product (the product in the tray protrudes above the level of the tray flange)
  • even slight wear of the heat sealing tool will cause problems with this method

Peel Tab

This term describes the shape of the film which is trimmed from the pack after sealing. Some packs are designed to be peeled by the consumer and are therefore sealed and cut with a "peel tab" to make them easier to open. This can be any shape or size and can be positioned anywhere on the perimeter of the tray depending on the customer’s requirements.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging

PA offer two alternative methods of modifiying the atmosphere in the sealed pack – gas flushing (we call machines offering this method MAP-F) or vacuum flushing (MAP-V). If you’d like to read about the science behind MAP click here. The gas flushing method can be used where the residual oxygen levels required are greater than 1%. If the required residual oxygen levels are less than 1% these can only be guaranteed with the vacuum flushing method.

Foil Crimping

PA manufacture tooling to fit on the heat sealing equipment range for crimping board lids onto foil trays.

Overcapping

PA can offer overcapping as an option as well as heat sealing on its range of equipment.

Overprinting

PA work with a number of companies offering thermal printers for date coding etc. Details of these companies can be found by clicking here. These printers can either be fitted to our machines before they leave our factory or on site.

  Ancillary Equipment

We work with a wide range of companies offering specialist packaging or processing equipment. Details of these companies can be found by clicking here.
