Dave’s Apprenticeship Story

Updated: Aug 2, 2021

Dave Woolrich joined Packaging Automation as an apprentice in 2007 at the age of 18, this is Dave’s Apprenticeship story…

When I finished my A levels I did not want to go to University, I was really keen to get out there and start working so an Apprenticeship was the natural choice for me.

I was lucky enough to get onto the Packaging Automation Apprenticeship Programme as a Mechanical Fitter and had the opportunity to work across all departments in the business which gave me great experience but also developed my understanding of the busines as a whole – something that has been hugely beneficial to me in my current role.

Once I had completed my apprenticeship as a Mechanical Fitter, I moved across to the design department to get more varied experience. During this time PA supported me to do my HNC/HND and my finally my degree in Mechanical Engineering on day release at Manchester Metropolitan University where after 4 years I was awarded a first class honours degree.

Now in 2021, I am Senior Mechanical R&D Engineer, leading the R&D Team at Packaging Automation with an advanced skillset for someone of my age.

An apprenticeship gives the opportunity to get your career started without having to sit in the classroom, you can earn and learn on the job and have a fully rounded experience.
